Packing and Styling for a Tropical Destination

Hey there, lovely readers! It’s Summer Meddock again, and today I’m sharing my top tips for packing and styling for a tropical destination. If you’ve been following me for a while now, you might already know that a trip for me is an exciting time to plan the absolutely best in luxe flowy fits, and accessorize for the occasion. Who doesn’t love a good excuse to put on the cutest bikini and rest poolside while working on your tan with a cucumber mint refreshment in hand!?

Whether you’re heading to a sunny beach in the Caribbean, an exotic island in Southeast Asia, or a lush paradise in Mexico, you’ll want to be prepared to make the most of your trip. Here’s how to pack smart and look fabulous while enjoying your tropical getaway.

1. Light and Breathable Fabrics

When packing for a tropical destination, think light and breathable fabrics. Cotton, linen, and other lightweight blends are your best friends. These materials will keep you cool and comfortable in the heat and humidity. Pack a mix of shorts, skirts, dresses, and tops that can be easily mixed and matched. Don’t forget a few lightweight cover-ups for those sun-soaked beach days.

2. Versatile Swimwear

Swimwear is a must for any tropical vacation. Pack a couple of swimsuits in different styles—think one-piece and bikinis—so you have options for lounging by the pool or taking a dip in the ocean. This one piece from Free People is so chic, sexy and comfortbale!  Choose versatile pieces that can double as tops when paired with shorts or skirts. A stylish sarong or cotton trousers are also essential for transitioning from the beach to a beachside café or bar.

3. Sun Protection Essentials

The tropical sun can be intense, so sun protection is a top priority. Pack a wide-brimmed hat to shield your face from the sun, along with a good pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes. Don’t forget to bring plenty of sunscreen with a high SPF—look for a formula that’s water-resistant and reef-safe. A lightweight, long-sleeve button up (think linen or cotton) is a smart choice to pack for days when your skin need a little break but you still plan to be outdoors.

4. Comfortable Footwear

When it comes to footwear, comfort is key. Pack a pair of slides or comfortable sandals that you can wear for both beach and pool, or casual strolls around town. If you plan on doing any hiking or exploring, bring a pair of flexible, supportive walking shoes (think “travel shoes” and “hiking shoes”). Don’t forget a pair of your favorite wedge (this is my go-to!) or heeled sandals for your adult nights, spent cruising the town.

5. Accessories for Style and Function

Accessories can elevate your tropical wardrobe while serving practical purposes. A chic beach bag is perfect for carrying your essentials, like sunscreen, a water bottle, and a good book. Lightweight wraps and kimonos can be used as cover-ups, or even makeshift towels. Don’t forget a few pieces of statement jewelry to add a touch of your own personal style to your evening outfits. I prefer bangles, a couple of fun rings, and a gold necklace! In my opinion, styling with a hat is the easiest way to elevate a look and give your outfit just the right amount of flair.

If you're looking for the perfect hat to complete your tropical look, here are a few of my favorites (and where to buy them😉). Each of these options brings a unique style that can effortlessly enhance your ensemble.

6. Evening Wear for Tropical Nights

Tropical destinations often have vibrant nightlife, so pack a couple of outfits for those special evenings out. Think flowy maxi dresses, cute rompers, or stylish jumpsuits in tropical prints or bright colors. Lightweight fabrics are still important, even for evening wear. Add a pair of comfortable wedges or dressy sandals to complete your look.

7. Practical Travel Gear

Finally, don’t forget the practical travel gear that will make your trip smoother. A lightweight, foldable backpack is great for day trips and excursions. Pack a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated, and consider a waterproof phone case for beach and water activities. A portable charger can be a lifesaver for keeping your devices powered up on the go.
