Taking the Train from Soller to Palma

If you want to maximize your time in Mallorca, and see different areas on the island, I’ve got you covered!

The Ferrocarril De Soller is a historic train that runs daily, and can take you from Palma’s busy city to Sollers town center (and back).  One of our biggest debates was whether or not we should take the train while we stayed in Palma or in Soller.  After many discussions and brainstorming sessions between my husband and I, we chose to spend more time in Soller (4 nights) which ultimately made it possible for us to carve out a day of traveling to Palma and exploring the city. That day was dedicated to the Palma Cathedral tour, walking through the surprisingly busy city, stopping in boutiques, impromptu cocktails and a visit to Finka Farina, the most delicious pastry shop!

Just in case you're wondering why we would choose to spend more time in Soller than Palma… it’s mainly because of its sweet charm, and I happened to find a boutique plant based hotel that felt very peaceful and private (which I LOVED!!), but Soller also has a close proximity to other towns I really wanted to visit (Deia & Valldemossa). You can read more about the places we stayed on my previous blog post “Staying in Style”.

Now back to the train!  It’s departure location is about a 3 minute walk from our adorable hotel which made it convenient. NOTE: you do not want to rent a car and drive into this part of town. Leave the driving to the locals. Just trust me on this one ;)

Here are the things you need to know about taking the Ferrocarril De Soller (Soller/Palma Train) in either direction!

  1. The train can take you to and from Palma and Soller (not the ports, just the city centers)

  2. The route has 3 destinations - you can get on or off at any of these stops: Soller, Bunyola, or Palma

  3. You do not need a reservation to ride the train

  4. A train employee will collect payment during the train ride via credit card

  5. The cost is 24 euros for a one way ticket (Soller to Palma) - round trip tickets are available but you have to pre-select the return time

  6. The train departs each location at specific times - refer to their website for the current schedule

  7. The daily route has one stop (about half way) in Bunyola.  We didn't allocate time to explore this town, but I would have liked to!

  8. The train ride is approximately 1 hour

  9. Pack a water, the train can get very hot in summer time - you’ll want to pack a sweater or jacket for the cooler months

  10. There is a tram in Soller - do not get confused as the TRAM ONLY takes you to the Port de Soller  (NOT PALMA) - this is 9 euros one way and the schedule can be found here

Where do you get on the train you might ask….?  I wondered the same thing!

Soller Train: Located right next to Bar Ferrocarril (above the tram pick-up). Find the bar on Google Maps and pin it for reference.

Palma Train: Located at Estació Intermodal, right in the heart of the city (this is easy to find on the map). You can also follow a map to Parc de ses Estacions (basically a big grassy park area).

What to Expect: It’s a journey back in time, winding through the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, filled with breathtaking views. Olive groves, quaint little villages, and the kind of landscapes that make you want to pause and take it all in.

Why You Shouldn't Miss It: Yes it will take you to Palma, but you’ll miss a lot if you take this commute for granted—slow down, soak in the beauty of Mallorca, and let the journey itself become part of your adventure.

Pro Tips

To make your commute more meaningful.

Arrive Early: Trust me, this will give you a chance to settle in and snap a few pics before you depart.

Keep Your Camera Ready: This route is packed with wow moments—like when you suddenly burst out of a dark cold tunnel and are greeted by sweeping views. You’ll want to capture those.

Enjoy the Ride: Don’t be in a hurry. This is your time to relax, disconnect, and just enjoy the moment. Let the landscapes roll by and soak in the experience.

Hopefully this train ride will be a reminder that sometimes the journey is just as important as the destination.
